Latin

It is not easy to access the Latin language, even enthusiastic and talented people find the apparently vast word lists and extensive grammar tables to be so daunting as to preclude progress.

That does not have to be so.

An imaginative mixture of the rules of language with some pertinent history, philosophy and literary criticism engages people and gives a desire to apply themselves to the undeniably hard task of learning Latin.

As a subject, Latin continues to be a wise choice amongst those who aspire to the more prestigious universities and careers, for three distinct reasons;
  • The processes of translation and transliteration increase the ability to think precisely
  • The study of the subject necessarily produces a wide general understanding of the modern world, since Rome influenced its development to a great extent
  • Although English is not a fully Romantic language, it is very deeply influenced by Latin, especially in cultural context

My own interest in the Latin language arose from my investigation into the Roman occupation of Britain. Now, I study it for its own sake and have been involved in prepping students for GCSE and Classics.

The Cambridge Schools Classics Project utilises a series of graduated textbooks that conduct students from having no knowledge up to A Level standard, and this is a useful teaching aid that imparts the contemporary educational methodology. Used in conjunction with a rigorous learning of grammar and vocabulary, the course is successful.
